NEWMARKET COUNCIL SAHAWIA STREET EXTENSION. *» LOAN OF £-00 APPROVED. The application of the Newmarket Borough Council for authority to raise £800 to extend Sarawia Street has been resubmitted to the Local Bodies Loans Board, and advice was received at last night's meeting of the council from the Mayor (Mr. S. Donaldson) —who has been visiting Wellington on his return from the municipal conference—that it had been approved. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. G. E. Smerdon) presided in Air. Donaldson's absence. The secretary of the Auckland Grammar School Board advised that it had valued the area which the council proposed to acquire in connection with the Sarawia Street scheme at £6440, and had no objection to the council taking it under the Fublic Works Act.

The matter was referred to the Finance Committee for further consideration.

It was reported that objections to valuations in the borough would be considered by the Assessment Court on April 6 next. Motor Regulations. — The Public Works Department wrote seeking the cooperation of the council in enforcing the new motor regulations, which are calculated to reduce the alarming number of accidents in New Zealand. It had been alleged, it was stated, that all councils were not co-operating with one another in the matter of the issuing of motor drivers' licences, and the Department urged the council not to iSsue licenses without submitting applicants to practical tests.

The matter was referred to the Streets Committee and the traffic inspector.

Outhwaite Park Facilities.—lt was stated that the impression had got abroad that tho facilities placed on Outhwaite Park, at the corner of Park Road and Carlton Gore Road, were for restroom purposes. This, however, was not so, as the facilities were purely for the convenience of visitors to the park who wanted shelter, while lockers had been provided for organised play. There was, however, a possibility of a rest room following in the future. Building Returns.—The building inspector reported that during the month five permits had been issued for new buildings, alterations, additions, etc., to tho total value of £13,151 10/. The principal item related to* the rebuilding of the Newmarket Hotel at an estimated cost of £12,746.

The traffic inspector reported that 141 drivers' licenses had been renewed for tho year 1928-29, while heavy traffic fees had been received to the value of £24. During th<» licensing year just closing 1084 drivers' licenses and* 66 heavy traffic licenses were issued, the revenue derived from these sources being £339 12/6.
