AMERICAN SHIPPING TRADE.

CARRIED IN FOREIGN BOATS.

Showing the recent decline in the percentage of American foreign trade carried in American bottoms, the Merchant Marine Planning Committee of the Shipping Board has prepared a graph which indicates that the situation is rapicfiy reverting to that obtaining prior to the recent war. when only about 9 per cent of United States commerce was handled by American flags. T. H. Madigan, counsel tor the Shipping Board, has issued the following illuminating statement in this connection:

In 1830 American ships carried cargoes valued at 120,000,000 dollars out of a total commerce in that year of 144,000,(Wi nnn" j n * ur forei Bn trade was 239,000,000 dollars, of which American ships carried 198,000,000 dollars.
