SCHOOL TENNIS.

FORM ABOVE AVERAGE.

MISS NEWTON WINS SINGLES

A PROMISING BOY PLAYER.

Form above the average for junior tennis was shown at the Remuera Club's courts this morning, when the secondary and primary schools competitions were continued.

In the girls' secondary schools singles championship the competition was completed, Miss T. D. Newton, a Maori player, who has achieved considerable success in various tournaments during the past two or three years, beating Miss R. Taylor after a good display. Miss Taylor had shown good form right through the early rounds, and if she had opened out a little more to-day she would probably have done better, as there was but little between the pair. In the first set Miss Taylor won, 5—7, but Miss Newton took the next two and the match. The winner was steady, and scored well with her forehand drive, the best stroke in her game. Her backhand, however, was rather at fault, and .it is this part of her game that she is now trying hard to improve. Miss Newton recently joined the Eden and Epsom Club, and has already won a place in the second A team. She is just eighteen years of age, and last year was runner up in the girls' junior championship. She has hopes of winning the Maori ladies' championship at Hastings during Easter. Another promising player in the competition was Miss B. Griffiths. Only fourteen years old, she showed a number of good shots, and was very cool. She was beaten by Miss P. Rukutai, another Maori girl player, but in the primary girls singles, in which she is also competing, she has not yet been defeated. In the primary schools boys' singles B. Chalmers, a son of Mr. C. C. Chalmers, ran out a good winner. He is a Takapuna lad, and had a variety of strokes, while his courtcraft is excellent. J. Gunn, however, gave him a good go in the second round, pressing him to 7—5. In the semifinals of this division Otahuhu had three representatives. D. Cochrane, who went down to Chalmers in the final, went through the early rounds without the loss of a single game. Results are as follows: — Secondary Schools. Girls' Singles.—Miss T. D.
