INFANTS' SCHOOL

FOR DOMINION ESTATB. MINISTER WILL RECOMMEND GRANT. That a grant be made for the erection of an infants' school on the Dominion Estate, at the corner of Dominion Road and Mount Albert Road will be a recommendation which the Minister of Education will make to the next Cabinet meeting he attends. The Hon. R. A. Wright made a promise in those terms "lit morning, when a deputation, headed by Mr. C. H. Webb, of the Mount Roekill School Committee, asked that a school to accommodate children living within a radius of half a mile be erected.

There was an area of four and a half acres at the end of Dominion Road, and if a main school were built there the overcrowded schools of the. Mount Eden district and also the Moont - School would, he relieved, said Mr. Webb. Children living within the half-mile radius had over a mile to go to tin nearest school.- Two main roads alive with traffic had to be crossed. It was estimated that there were 500 children in the area, which was thickly populated. , After hearing the other speakers, lir. Wright said much had been made <jf the dangers to which children Were exposed in crossing streets. However, he did notice that in the great majority of accidents reported in the newspapers more adults than children were knocked down. Children were concerned in very few accidents. It would be difficult for the Department if new schools had to be built all over the country simply because motor cars had increased in number.

"I promise to recommend an infant school at all events," said Mr. Wright. "That may meet the case for a time. If that is not enough we shall have to see what can be done later on. In any case, the infant school will always be of service, as there will always be children coming on to fill it."
