SHOPS IN MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS.
Several local bodies, including the borough councH* of Taufanga, Palmerston North, Hawera, and Nelson, proposing to erect blocks of municipal buildings in which there should be shorn for letting, have found that the law stands in the way, shops cannot be included in sueh buildings. The Municipal Association Conference at Nelson, upon the motion of the Hawera Council delegate agreed that where the council erects a hall, library, or other public building, it should be empowered to include therein shops fcnd offices, so as to derive therefrom rentals in excess of the annual charges involved 1n the erection of euch shops and offices, the previous sanction of the Local Government Loan Board to be obtained where the building is erected out of I<*n money, or of the Minister of Internal Affairs in other cases.
