TO-DAY'S RACING

Trentham Finale.

WJIC. Autumn Meeting. — Nucleus Again Lifts HighWeight.

STAR STRANGER'S GOLD CUP.

HUTT HANDICAP TO CROWN AREA

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

TRENTHAM, this day.

The Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting is concluding in fine weather, before a large attendance. The weather is fine but dull. The track is fast.

Bright Day Goes Under Again.

Bright Day was a good favourite for the Second Highweight, carrying £380 more than Lancer, while Uralla and Nucleus were next fancied. When the field settled down Rotowhcro was in charge from Timi Inihi, Uralla, Lancer and Bright Day. There was no alteration as they crossed the top. Rotowhero was first to turn for home from Timi Inihi, Lancer, Uralla, Clavers, Bright Day and Nucleus. Half-way down Lancer looked as though he would win, but Bright Day (on the inner), Clavers and Nucleus came at him, the last-named drawing out to win by a length and a-half from Bright Day, who beat Clavers by half a length. Then came Lancer, Mandarine and Uralla.

Tiega Falls.

All paraded for the Hutt Handicap, and Duke Abbey was favourite, being entrusted with about £580 more than White Fang, while Tiega and Le Choucas were next best supported. Duke Abbey was the early leader from Cerf, Alyson, Damaris, Don Jose and Crown Area. Before they reached the top Damaris got on to the heels of a horse in front and was nearly down, while Tiega, who was just behind, fell. Duke Abbey and White Fang led across the top from Crown Area, Don Jose, Damaris and Cerf. The order was the same into the straight, but White Fang then retired. Crown Area was in front at the distance, and, stalling off a strong challenge by Vertigern, scored by a head. Duke Abbey was a length and a-half away, third, with Don Jose, Cerf, Damaris and Alyson next.

An Australasian Record.

The four earCed went to the post for the Trentham Gold Cup, and Rapier was entrusted with £700 more than Star Stranger. Satrap was soon in front and led on to the course proper from Wild Pigeon, Rapier and Star Stranger, Satrap was about seven lengths in front of Wild Pigeon as they turned out of the straight, and increased his advantage to 12 lengths along the back. Six furlongs from home Rapier and Star Stranger moved up, but Satrap still had a big break as they crossed the top. Before the straight was reached Star Stranger had run up second, but he looked to have an almost impossible task to reach Satrap. The latter, however, commenced to tire at the false rail, and, hard ridden by Reed, Star Stranger got up in time to win by three-quarters of a length from Satrap, with Rapier five lengths further back, third. It was a great performance on the part of the winner, and he received a great reception on returning to scale. The time, 3.22J, constitutes an Australasian record, the previous best being 3.225, put up by Windbag and Spearfelt in the Melbourne Kennaquhair in the Sydney Cup. Rapier is to race at Awapuni and will not be saddled up again in public till he goes to Sydney in the spring.
