BAD SMASH AT TE PAPAPA.

Tomatoes, cabbages and many other vegetables were sent flying in all directions at Te Papapa this morning when the 8.10 train from Onehunga to Auckland collided with a motor van in which there were three Chinese. Passengers on the tram state that the engine of the motor vehicle appeared to stall on the railway crossing. One of the Chinese Chan On, aged 23, was brought by the St John Amulance to the Auckland Hospitai with a compound fracture of the left leg.

The vehicle was proceeding along Church Street from ""Te Papapa towards Onehunga. After turning into Church Street from Captain Spring's Road the driver had to pass over the railway crossing to the west side of Te Papapa railway station. There is a bend in the line before it reaches Church Street, on the Onehunga side, and it is not easy for anyone in Church Street to Jcnow of an approaching train unless the driver of the train blows his whistle continuously.

While negotiating this .crossing the vehicle was run into by the train with a loud crash that was heard at a long distance. Two of the Chinamen jumped clear before the impact, but the third suffered severe injuries consisting of a broken leg and shock to his system.

The motor vehicle was smashed to pieces and the load of vegetables scattered in all directions. The train, after a delay of 10 minutes proceeded on its journey to Auckland.
