SETTLERS NEAR BOI'NDARY!

DARGAVILLv, this day. ]• ires lighted with the permission and under the supervision of the State Forest Ser\ ice -by settlers in the - bush clearings at the YVaimamaku end and also on the southern boundary of the Waipoua forest caused rumours that the forest was on fire. A week ago, when the fire assumed dangerons- -proportions, about 30' men were hastily collected from Donnellj-'s Crossing and from the Public Works camps, and were rti9hcd by motor Jorpythrough the forest rotfd'ftcf .the scene ;"of the outbreak.' The flanks were satisfactorily checked.
Without the new road the Forest Service would have had no chance of reaching the outbreak with men and implements.
