FIRE PREMIUM REDUCTIONS

TRIAL BORES FOR WATER

The Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, presided at last night's meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council.

Gladstone Road Reservoir. —The Public Works Department offered the site of the Gladstone Road reservoir to the council for £1250. After the Mayor had explained that application had been made to the Minister for the land it was decided to take no action.

A Building a Day.—A building a day ib still going up within the borough. For the three weeks ending February 3 21 permits valued at £7286 were issued. Included in that number were eight dwellings and two shops valued at £6100.

Boring for Water.—As there has been a dry spell for some time, the Mayor sug gested that perhaps the time was opportune to put down at least one trial bore for water at Bribbleliurst Park. He went on to say that if sufficient water was there, there was a possibility of supplying .baths or artificial lakes. Councillors suggested the employment of a water diviner. A councillor: "That's the worst of diviners; they can't tell how far to uo." On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to obtain information as to the approximate cost of. a trial bore and report to the. combined committee meeting next week.

Fire Premium Reduction. —Speaking in regard to a possible reduction in fire premiums, the Mayor paid a tribute to the Fire Brigade, its up;to-date equipment, and the fact that electric fire alarms had been installed throughout the borough. He said he would like to have the matter investigated, especially in view of his election pledges in that regard. The matter was referred to the Fire and Water Committee with power to act.

City - Watershed. —It was decided to make application to the City Council for the council <is a whole to visit the source of the city' 3 water supplies. In supporting the proposal, the Major wished it to be distinctly understood that no allegations were made concerning the supply, and he also reminded councillors that lie had always been in favour of going further afield for the city's water. The proposed visit was purely one of inspection.
