CLOSING OF KAWARAU DAM.
INSURANCE REQUIRED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. ( The statement from Wellington that 1 the Public Works Department offers no 1 objection to the Kawarau dam being closed, to take advantage of the abnormally dry season, but it requires the former safeguards to be renewed, includ- ( ing the insurance cover of £40,000 came as a 1 surprise to the Kawarau Goldmining Company, which has not received even a formal acknowledgment from the Minister of Public Works of his receipt of its first request. It is understood that when the direc- ' tore made their request for permission to i close the dam gates the question of the required provision for indemnity against damage by the waters of Lake Wakatipu had not been discussed. Unless a number of companies give a definite promise to work the Kawarau Company's directors will probably decide that the providing , of insurance, which is rather costly, would not be worth while. 1 ;
