GARRULOUS MAORI.
REMANDED FOR A WEEK.
Very few offenders at the Police Court come out of the prisoners' room and step into the dock smiling. Mate Takatu (23), a Maori, did this morning. In fact, he was grinning and talking rapidly both in his native tongue and in broken English. When the charge of having failed to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation had been read to him, Mate Takatu said, "W hat's all that mean, me no understand."
After he had been remanded for a week pending the arrival of a police file from Gisborne, the Maori was still talking as quickly as ever. ' It's over now, you come here ajrain next week," a police sergeant told him. "All right, me be here." said the duskv one, evidently quite contented.
