GALA DAY AT MILFORD

Five hundred people attended the ceremony held at Mil ford Beach mi Saturday to mark the handing over 11 f the dancing pavilion and paraphernalia which will make the beach even more attractive to those who like surf bathing.

The North Shore Transport Company lias donated a dancing pavilion, also a swimming pontoon. The pifts were officially handed over 011 Saturday. A letter from the Hon. E. W. Alison was read by Mr. G. Malcolm, a member of the Takapuna Borough Council, hoping that the gifts would be appreciated by residents and visitors.

Mr. Malcolm received the gift on behalf of the Takapuna Council and the people of the district, thanked the donors and said that Milford would no doubt become Auckland's most popular beach. The intention is to make Milford a Coney Island, at least, on a small scale. The Milford Cruising Club held yacht races during the afternoon. The results were:— Over 14ft: Ahola 1, Glady 2. Lnder 14fL: Mabel 1, Senior 2. The Surf C'htb gave two life-saving demonstrations which were much appreciated. ROYAL N.Z. YACHT SQUADRON. NGA TOA WINS HORTON BEQUEST. MATAItERE WINS M CLASS. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a general handicap race on Saturday for the lirsr and second-class yachts, the prize being the llorton bequest of -0. After a very close race Nga Toa wen by 19s on corrected time from "Windward, Kotiri being third, only 4s behind the second boat. The race started at 2.30 p.m. off the King's wharf, the course taking the boats round the Bastion light beacon, thence down Rangitoto Channel to the Saltworks buoy oft' Rangitoto reef, back round Bastion, back again to SaltworKs beacon, back to Bastion, and tini.:h off the King's wharf.

The handicaps were : —Ariki, scr; lorangi. 3m : Tliclma. 81 in ; Rawene. 9£in ; Nga Xoa, iUin ; Victory, lljm ; Moaua. 12m; Ida. 17m: Kotiri. 22in: Waione, 22itn ; Heartsease, 20 m ; Windward, 26in ; Rangi, 2Siu : Scout, 2'Jm ; DelviUe, 30m ; Gloriana, 34in.

There was a light but steady northerly breeze blowing, which improved as the day wore on, but was always on the light side. This gave the boats a lead (.'own liarhour to the Bastion, a dead beat out to Saltworks, a tlat run back with spinnakers, another beat out and back, and a lead home.

All were closely bunched for the start, lorangi, being a bit too keen, got over too soon and lost 50s by returning. From a pretty start Nga Toa, Prize, Ariki, Moana, Ida. Kotiri. Kawene, -DelviUe, Waione, Tliclma, Rangi, lorangi and Gloriana got away in this order. Ariki and lorangi led to Bastion and across the harbour. THE M CLASS. The M class were started off the newcompass dolphin in Judge's Bay, going round the Bastion light beacon, Rough Rock buoy, back to Bastion and Rough Rock, finishing off the King's wharf. After the usual close race the finish was: Matarere Oh 17m 00s, Manene Oh 10m os, Mawhiti Oh 20m 18s, Maratea Oh 21m 12s, Maroro Oh 22m 31s, Mischief Oh 20m 395, Maia Oh 27ni 03s. Result: Matarere 1, Manene 2, Mawhiti 3. The officers for the day were Messrs. .1. 11. Frater, G. D. Deery, and R. H. Mays. The launch Avis was placed at the disposal of the officials for starting the M class, MANUKAU YACHT CLUB. RACE TO CORNWALLIS. The Manukau Yaclit and Motor Boat Club held cruising races to Cornwallis on Saturday afternoon for yachts and launches. The yacht race resulted:—Elsie 1. Betty 2, Limelight 3. The launch/race resulted: — Sea Wolfe 1. Miharo 2. Regal 3. Twenty members of the Ponsonby Cruising Club were entertained over the weekend by the Manukau Yaclit Club, the visitors being accommodated at Mr. Griffin s bach at Cornwallis. Fishing was indulged in on Sunday with much success. Next Saturday the club will hold their regatta, when the open speed boat and open yacht championship will be decided and a race held for Cornwell Cup crews. TAURANGA YACHT CLUB. FINAL SMITH CUP RACE. The Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat flub held the final race for the Smith Cup on Saturday afternoon. Seven of the sevenfoot sailing boats started. Results were :—- Jvon Pemherton's Dottrell 1, G. RICHMOND CLUB REGATTA. SAILED IN IDEAL WEATHER. CLOSE FINISHES IN SMALL CLASSES. The Richmond Cruising Club held their annual regatta on Saturday, when races were held for all classes, from the 26foorers to the 14-footers. The races were started at intervals of live minutes, starting at 2.40 p.m. Except for the keel class, the entr: >s were good, and a feature was that nearly every boat started and finished. The handicapping was good, especially in the 22-foot mullet boat class, which Kokiri won by eight seconds from Otira. The Y class boat Romp, sailed by S. Leyland, jun., put up a great fight in her class, and actually beat the Alert; in over the line, winning easily. Mistral, in the S class, sailed her usual good race, but just failed to give Waitui her time. Starloch led the H class home, with Celox pushing her all the way. Drone beat Surprise home by 37 seconds, and. having to allow Surprise 30 seconds, had the narrow margin of 7 seconds to the good, but Wild Wave wor. The officers for the day were:—Starter and judge. Mr. T. L. Thompson ; timekeepers. Messrs. L. Cunning-ham and J. W. Baillie; recorder, Mr. G. E. Layeoek. All events started from Mr. .las. Donald's launch.
