TWO JOCKEYS ON THE CARPET

The Matamata Racing Club's annual meeting was lield on Saturday in beautiful weather, before a large attendance. The chief event, the Matamata Cup, was captured by Rarakau, the second leg of the double being won by Macrooin. The Okoroire Hack Cup went to Ripon Abbey, while To Koroke won the opening and closing events. E. Keeping was lined £2 for looking around whilst riding Ripon Abbejin the Okoroire Hack Cup. J. Gray Mas suspended for three months for careless riding and jostling in the straight during the running of the Railway Handicap, in which event Gray had the mount on Day Guard, who is alleged to have interfered with Macroom During the day the sum of £19,689 was put through the totalisator, against £21,810 for the corresponding meeting last season—a decrease of £2121. A Big Field. A field of eighteen went to the post for the Hinuera Handicap, and Yourg Pretender was made a good favourite, carrying about £230 more than Carlaris, while Bright Comet and Red Day were also well supported. Bright Comet was the early leader from Day Abbey, Hone Heke, and Young Pretender. Hone Heke had taken charge across the top with Young Pretender, Day Abbey, Cybele and Bright Comet following in that order. Hone Heke was first into the straight and went on to win easily by one and a-half lengths from Cybele, who beat Bright Comet by a neck. Young Pretender was fourth, followed by Te Waka, Oscar, Carlaris, Kerry Dance, Red Day and Haurua. A Favourite Scores. Half a dozen went to the post for the Okoroire Hack Cup Handicap. Ripon Abbey was made favourite, carrying £160 more than Rarakau, with High Rose next fancied. Owen led out of the straight and along the back was attended by Ripon. Abbey, High Rose, Wiltshire, Lady Spalpeen/King Amans and Rarakau. Ripon Abbey took charge before the top was reached, attended by Owen, High Rose, Wiltshire, Lady Spalpeen, King Amans and Rarakau. Ripon Abbey was first to turn for home from High Rose, Rarakau and Owen, and went on to win by a head from Lady Spalpeen, who beat Rarakau by a length. King Amans was next, followed by Wiltshire, High Rose and Owen. Macroom Just Gets There. Tea Time, New Moon and Lord Star were the scratchings in the Railway Handicap, and Macroom was a good favourite, being £233 better supported than Day Guard, while King Arch also had friends. Day Guard was the early leader from Bracken Abbey, but the latter went to the front along the back from Day Guard, Muscari and Regent. Across the top Bracken Abbey, still had charge and was attended by Day Guard, Macroom, Muscari and Regent. The order was the same into the straight, and in a good finish Macroom got up to beat Day Guard by a nose, with King Arch third, another length further back. Muscari was fourth, with Regent and Bracken Abbey next. Ladies' Boy Goes Fast. Ten of the horses carded in the Putaruru Stakes failed to parade leaving a field of eighteen to go to the post. Venus Abbey was the public choice and carried about £55 more than Rangi Kokiri, with Carlaris next in request. When they were let go Venus Abbey was soon in front from Ladies' Boy, Day Guide and High Flight. Ladies' Boy was in charge along the back from Venus Abbey, Day Guide, Carlaris, Cometary, and High Flight. The order was the same across the top, but Day Guide wis in front when the field turned into the straight, with Venus Abbey and Ladies' Boy right up with her. In a good finish Ladies 1 Boy beat Venus Abbey by a short neck, with Day Guide half a length away. Rangi Kokiri was fourth and the next to finish were Archieleen, Valkyriti, Bright Comet, Tarrapeea and Wild Mint. The Final Event. Macroom, The Author, New Moon and the bracket Wedding March and Ripon Abbey were withdrawn from the Walton Handicap, the concluding event of the n.eeting. Te Koroke, who was favourite, carried about £200 more than Berinthia, with Prince Lu third choice. When they were let go Berinthia led from Prince Lu, Menance and Te Koroke. The order was unchanged along the back, and Berinthia led into the straight from Prince Lu, Menance, Te Koroke and Gold Rain. Te Koroke then came through and won by a length from Prince Lu, who beat Gold Rain by a similar distance.
