USE OF COAL.
RESULT OF MODERN METHODS
"As an example of the improvement in the use of coal an American journal states that in 1920 the railroads in the 5 United States used 1971b of coal per 1000 gross freight ton-miles. In 1926 the same amount of work was done with 1551b of coal, an increase in thermal and mechanical efficiency of over 25 per cent. Even more striking is the increase in efficiency in the use of coal in the production of electric power. In the United States in 1919 it required 3.21b of coal to generate one kilowatt-hour. In 1926 only 1.951b of coal were used per kilowatt-hour. "The United States, the United Kingdom and Germany are by far the leading producers. Their combined production is about three-fourths of the world's total. They are also the principal exporters of coal. Great Britain is leadfng by a wide margin. Poland ranks fourth as an exporting country. France is fourth in production and is the leading import country."
