A conference was held this morning between the Minister of Public Works and tho Gisbnrne Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of the railway route between (lisborno and Wairoa. The Minister had with him Mr. McKenzie, assistant enginecr-in-e.hief, Public Works Department. Mr. Rodie, commercial manager of the railways, and Mr. Fay, head of the. operation division of the railways. Mr. W. I>. Lysnar. M.P., was also present. He explained that tho Gisborne people wanted the figures on v. hicli the Government had given its decision in favour of the coastal as against tli« inland route explained and investigated.
Mr. Armstrong, Mayor of Gisborne. said the general feeling in tho district was that the Government was making a mistake in adopting the coastal route. Discussion is proceeding.
