This week the North Shore ambulance received an early morning call, and so rough and inaccessible was the road to the invalid's house that the windscreen of the vehicle was smashed by the jolting. The ambulance at Devonport is an English-built vehicle and during its three years' service it has had a severe strain put upon it, and it will probably not be long till tho body of it will have to be remodelled to bring it more into line with such vehicles, which need oil occasion to traverse rough roads. It is stated that tho New Zealand-built body is preferable to that of English make and will stand up to its work better, and probably the North Shore ambulance is the last ot the imported articles as far as the Hospital Board is concerned. Despite the disability of having to cross the harbour, some record times have been made in getting patients to the hospital, the drivers being picked men and keen at their work, answering calls at all hours of the night and day. The Devonport Ferry Company facilitates as far as possible the efforts to get the ambulance across the water a fact muffh appreciated by sufferers who realise the importance of minutes in a time of emergency.
