ON THE MIDDLESEX.
A STOWAWAY ARRIVES,
.Tolm Garside (»2) was a "deadhead" all the way from Balboa, in the Panama zone, to Auckland by the steamer Middlesex, which arrived here yesterday. He was handed over to the police on arrival and duly made his appearance before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning at the Police Court on a charge of stowing away.
Garside, whose clothing consisted merely of a pair of nether jrarments, a shirt and a cap, pleaded guilty.
The chief officer gave evidence of the discovery of accused on board the day after the Middlesex cleared Balboa. Garside's conduct was excellent, and he worked well on the voyage out.
"It itj .difficult to know jiist what to do with these stowaways," said the magisttete..
On the a)pplication of Senior Sergeant Cummirigs, Garside was remanded for one week so that further inquiries might be made concerning his character and antecedents.
