TASMANIAN TROTTING DERBY. Since the inception of the Tasmanian Trotting Derby, interest in the event has increased, and this year the Northern rasmanian Trotting Club had a splenf Derby meeting at Launceston a lortnight ago, though the race was poor as a spectacle on account of the outstanding superiority of the winner. The Derby was won by Betty Culloden, the most promising tluee-year-old that Ins ever raced in Tasmania. The time was slower than that recorded last yeawhen The Ape scored, but the winner could have made better figures Be'tv Culloden was generally regarded as unbeatable. The start was jumbled, but one of thosp who ,moved away satisfactorily was the winner, and when she got clear of the ruck, she quickly ran past the leader, and the result Was never afterwards in doubt. She was followed home by Village Star, who travelled smartly without being able to go the pace of the. winner, and Gazelle, who possibly would have made things more interesting had he not lost a good deal of ground through meeting with interference early in the race. Betty Culloden is a shapely filly by Culloden, and was sent Tasmania from South Australia in May. Just how good Betty Culloden will be U doubtful. On the second day of the Elphm two days' carnival a week later she gave a further sample of her quality by starting from the back mark (98 yards) In a two mile event, and defeating a large field.
