PAHIATUA MEETING.

CUP TO ORATRIX.

DOBBIN TAKES THE SPRINT,

GREEN RIDES THREE OF LAST

FOUR WINNERS,

(By Telegraph.Special to "Star.")

PALMERSTON N., Wednesday.

The annual meeting of the Pahiatua i Racing Cliv> was o[-?ncd to-daj', in stil- J try weather. Scratching reduced several of the fields to small proportions, 1 with the result that there was a decrease jn the totalisator turnover. The Wel-lington-owned mare, Oratrix, won the Cup from Ardfinnan and Henna. The first and second horses are trained at Trentham. At the conclusion of the race the 50-guinea silver cup was presented to the owner, Mr. R. J. Murphy, and J. Barry secured the gold-mounted whip. The open sprint went to Dobbin, who won easily from Coot and March On. The totalisator turnover was £9G91, compared with £12,828 on the opening day last year, a decrease of £3137. T. Green rode three winners and B. Reed two. Easy Money for Hinekatorangi. Nine started in the Maiden, the favourites being Hinekatorangi and Aurora Borealis. Hinekatorangi began well, and was attended to the turn by Vindication and Brown Sugar, with Aurora Borealis and Timi Inihi next. Once in line, Hinekatorangi came away and won with ease by three lengths, from Aurora Borealis, who beat Timi Inihi by a length. Miss Scandal was fourth, and Vindication next. It was easy money for Hinekatorangi. Aurora Borealis did not appear to get a good passage at the turn, where Timi Inihi covered a lot of ground. Badly Ridden Race. Horomea, Lady Gay and Othon were all well in the High-weight. Othon got badly left through swerving away as the barrier rose. When well on their feet Willow Wai had charge, and he was well clear in the first halt*. Wilderness went up to him on the turn, and settled him as soon as they hit the straight. Wilderness was well clear a furlong from the post, but had to be shaken up to beat Lady Gay 'by a head. Willow Wai was three lengths back third, followed by Horomea, Moepai and March On. Horomea was never threatening danger, and ran a poor race. Willow Wai would have done better more patiently handled, and Wilderness also nearly lost through going up too «oon. Lady Gay ran a good race, and with a better-timed run would have won. A Small Field. There were three starters only in the Hamua Hack. Tintoretto was the favourite. Land Rent made a slow pace to toe straight), where Tintoretto game, through on the rails anil won without difficulty, by a length and a-lialf from Lieutenant Bill, who beat Land Rent by a length. Big Punt on Ardfinnan. Seven started in the Cup, Oratrix being a solid favourite. At the start Royal Game and Kilmiss collided, and lost a good deal of ground, Henna also was slow away. Twink made the running, and in the back stretch was joined by Kilmiss and Henna, with Oratrix next. This bunch led into the straight, where Oratrix came to ihe front. With a furlong to go Ardfinnan challenged, and looked dangerous, but kicked up again. Oratrix held him safe and won by half a length. Henna was a length and a-half away third, with Kilmiss a moderate fourth, and Capitulation next. Oratrix won comfortably, and was always going well. Ardfinnan, for whom there was a surprising amount of money, ran one of his rare, good races. Half a mile from home he was last. A lot of use was made of both Henna and Kilmiss after they got away badly, and they should have done better. Royal Game was never dangerous, but he was well up on the home turn. Good Generalship. Another three-horse field went out in th .® K°nini Handicap. Lin Arlington, With a ;>lb allowance, was a good favourite. He led to the straight, where ypnotic moved up and had him beaten a furlong from home, Green being content to win with his head in front. Volplane was three lengths away, and never looked a winner. Green outrode We apprentice on Lin Arlington. A Good Thing Beaten. Scratching? left seven in the Hack opnnt. Backers went for Tom Byrne, ».jj e mate of the maiden winner, ridden by T. Green. Kaukura and •tanagra were also well supported. At the start Eaukura was very poorly off and Tom Byrne led to the «irn from Tanagra and Tatrina. Tanagra went up on the turn, and was dear « the distance. Here Lady Cvntfiia arew up and beat him home by a head. «aukura was three lengths awav, w&h ttmihoro a moderate fourth; then came t ( n B . vr,lc {U, d Carrigallen. Tammna was a good thing beaten. In the first Pace his rider made his run too soon, nen at the finish he was outridden b* aany on Lady Cynthia. Kaukura was mucky. Tom Byrne had every chant-e. Old Dobbin Easily, Dobbin was a hot favourite for Mi* open sprint, with Coot and Deluge well hacked. Dobbin was first out, but i-ady Ideal headed him off and led to 'he turn, where Birkie and Coot were flandy. Once in line Dobbin camo on and won with ease by four lengths irom Coot, who beat March On by a «ngth. Deluge was a fair fourth, "and .ie was next. Dobbin won very easily. Deluge was not too lucky in the straight. Green v. Reed. Lin Arlington, with T. Green up, was ®. favourite for the five-horse race which concluded the day's racing, but here was almost as much money for Aro de Val, on whom R. Beed had the Grey Mist and Miss Scandal J"ade the running to the straight from he two favourites. When in line Lin Arlington came on, and won by two from Aro de Val > who headed on Miss Scandal on the post. Gordon owift was a moderate fourth. It was a vi' for Lin Arlington. Aro de i»al had every chance.
