DEATH BY POISONING.
WOMAN NOT YET IDENTIFIED OPENING OF INQUEST. An Inquest was opened this morning concerning the death of the woman who was found on Monday morning last in an apartment house at 399, Upper Queen Street, suffering -from the effects of poison. She was taken by the St. John Ambulance to the Auckland Hospital where she died the following afternoon. The woman is believed to be Miss Minnie Knott, aged 54, who left Woodville early last month. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., was coronei and Sergeant Angland conducted the in quest. Barbara J. M. Collins, proprietress of the apartment house, stated that deceased arrived there on January 13 and paid for a night's lodging. She. however, remained at the house and had paid £1 2/0, leaving £1 5/ still owing At a quarter-past eleven on Monday last witness' little girl had told her that deceased was making a funny noise. Witness went to the room and found the door fastened br a ehair. On forcing it open she found deceased lying on the floor. The police were summoned and deceased was taken to the hospital. There was half a bottle of poison in the room. At no time did deceased tell witness her name. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
