WELLINGTON, Friday.
A city fire engine collided with a taxi and capsized on to it this afternoon. Three firemen were injured.
The fire engine was going to an outbreak in Sydney Street and it met the taxi outside the entrance to the Queen's wharf. In endeavouring to avert a collision the driver of the fire engine, E. Petherick, swerved sharply to the right, with the result that the machine capsized. The firemen seated at the back of the engine were all thrown clear, and escaped injury, with the exception of J. Philp, who was thrown on his head. He was taken to the Bowen Street Hospital for treatment, and returned later to the fire station. x Pethrick and A. 'W. Leadbrook, the officer in charge of the engine, were thrown from the front seat and were crushed between the engine and the taxi. Spectators had to lift the engine back on to its wheels before the two men were liberated. Neither suffered anything more serious than bruises and cuts. The traffic officer on duty outside the wharf gates jumped out of the way just in time as the engine crossed the control platform. The taxi was not damaged to any creat extent, but damage amounting to about £20 was done to the engine, which was towed back to the station by one of the Harbour Board's tractors. [ Two women passengers in the taxi . and the driver were not hurt.
