OUR PORK NOW.
Australian Producers Down On New Zealand. HIGHER DUTY ASKED TOR. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" says that an impending move on the part of producers is an application for an increase in duty on bacon and pork. This is being directed chiefly against New Zealand, which country provides the greater part of Australia's importations of these products. The competition of the Dominion. in these markets is regarded as altogether unfair to local pig raisers since the New Zealand Government, to foster the trade, has granted a bonus on exported pork. 3 Trade returns show that last year Australia exported 1,814,0001b of bacon and ham and imported 375,0001b, of which 352,0001b came from New Zealand. The exports of pork totalled 481,0001b, while the imports amounted to 733,0001b, of which New Zealand supplied all but 2001b.
