THE SMELLING-SALTS
CONTAINER.
HOW TO RECHARGE IT.
Amongst our treasured possessions there is sure to be a smelling-salts bottle, perhaps of cut glass, probably silver-topped, and most certainly endowed with some sentimental value. But the refreshing salts may be utterly exhausted and refuse to be revived any longer by the addition of occasional doses of liqtiid ammonia.
To recharge the bottle at home, empty all old liquid and the salts themselves; wash the bottle well in warm water and soap till every trace of smell has been removed; rinse in cold water and drain till quite dry.
Then use this re-fill, which is so powerful that it has been termed "everlasting"; to put it more modestly, it will certainly last many years.
Required for a medium-sized container: Four drachms sal tartar, 3 drachms gran, muriate of ammonia; 2i minims oil of neroli, 2i minims oil of rose, 8 minims spirits of ammonia, 2i minims oil of lavender. ~
In the bottom Of " the. clean container place a quarterririch ..layer of cotton wool. On to this pour'the various oils mentioned above, then drop in the mixed Bajlts (Le., sal tartar and the granulated muriate of ammonia, well mixed' together) and finally pour the. spirits of ammonia' over the lot;.' J V
Stopper* the container very tightly, let.it-stand unopened for a'"week before] putting it into use, and' you will taVe a most revivifying smelling-salts always at hand.
If a fairly large container is to be refilled, use double the quantities given. Should.you prefer the volatile variety, here is a reliable recipe'for it:
Required: Half pint strong liquid ammonia, half drachm oil of lavender, half drachm oil- of rosemary, two drops oil of bergamot, fiv© minims oil , of peppermint. Mix these ingredients thoroughly by shaking them in a bottle. Cork very tightly, leave for a week and use the fragrant contents as required putting a little at th© time in the container for daily use.
