INTOXICATED IN CAR.
YOUNG FARMER FINED £25. DEFIED TRAFFIC INSPECTOR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, this day. A young farmer named Francis John Douglas, of Hawke's Bay, to-day defended himself against the charges of having been intoxicated when in charge of a motor car, and of having driven dangerously and used indecent language in Willis Street. The police evidence was that Douglas passed a stationary tramcar. Later his motor was stopped by a traffic inspector, who asked him for his license. He refused to produce it and used indecent language. Eventually he showed the license. He was encouraged by others to defy the inspector, and was arrested and taken to the police station, where he was seen by doctors. Dr. Park said that from his appearance Douglas had been drinking fairly heavily on Saturday, but when seen at 1.15 on Sunday he was practically sober. Witness, however, did not think he was fit to drive, even at the time of his examination. After a long hearing Mr. Page, S.M., fined Douglas £25 and prohibited him from driving for twelve months.
