FIRES SPREADING.

IN MONOVALE SWAMP.

STILL RAGING FIERCELY.

MAKING PROGRESS SOUTHWARD.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

Hamilton, this day,

The fires in the Mono vale swamp, beyond LLairini, about six miles from Te Afamutu, are still raging. Men are patrolling the road Gay uns wglit, so as to give an alarm for more help, if the fire makes progress sufficient to menace the safety of the road.

All unimproved swamp land beyond Storey's property is a mass of burnt peat, with charred sticks of what was formerly manuka scrub showing above the ash.

The fire is right up to the road on both sides, and has made progress to the southward over Harrison's farm. Ditches have been dug and deepened in the hofje of obstructing the spread, while along the roadside fern and manuka have been cut back.
