SUN IN ABNORMAL STATE.
POSSIBLE EFFECT ON EARTH.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The well-known local astronomer, the Rev. B. Dudley, of Lvttelton, states: "I examined the sun instrumentally' on Wednesday and found it in a very abnormal physical condition. I counted about lo spots, some of them exceptionally large. These are grouped in three main centres, and indicate that the sun is. in .a very much disturbed state, likely to be reflected in more than ordinary magnetic agitation on the earth. This is in keeping with the well-known solar cycle, by which the sun is just now passing through a period of maximum spottedness.
"It is not unlikely, therefore, that the cables will inform us of further storms floods, etc., in various parts of tlip' world."
