EFFECT OF DROUGHT.

The effects of the drought vary in different districts, but an indication is to be seen in the monthly averages of the N.Z. Co.-op. Herd and Testing Association. These show the position as follows:— Waiulcu group which averaged 37.811b of j butterfat in September, in December declined to 301b; Buckland, from 34.041b iu September to 29.681b in December. Otorohanga in December headed the list with an average of 39.761b of fat for 1632 cows. Tairua (Coromaydel) was again second, with an average of 39.211b for 596 cows. Manuwaru has fallen to third position, with an average of 39.091b for 1432 cows. In October the average was 44.241b for 1201 cows, and in November 41.191b for 141S cows. The general decline in production is not as great as had been thought. For instance, the average for the 69,22-i cows tested by the association in December was 34.471b of fat. a good average, compared with 35.651b for December last year, when 56956 cows were tested. The averages in the first months of this season were: September, 33.281b for 47,891 cows; October, 36.051b for 61,568 cows; November, 36.641b for 67,414 cows; December, 34.671b for 66,224 cows.
