ANNIVERSARY REGATTA.

SEVENTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL

EVENT.

FULL PROGRAMME FOR MONDAY,

ENTRIES AND HANDICAPS.

The eighty-eighth anniversary of the Dominion will be celebrated on Monday by the usual regatta, which has been held continuously, according to old records, since 1850, ten years after the foundation. Monday's event differs very greatly from the old-time regattas, where Maori warriors took a conspicuous part in their long, low freeboard craft, manned by 50 or more dusky men in full war paint. Crews from the warships and merchantmen in port vied with each other over the Waitemata in their heavy ships' boats, while a few pleasure craft and trading cutters supplied the only sailing events. Later on keen racing developed in the schooners and scows', while the fleet of yachts grew until we now have the largest number in any port south of the line.

Citizens of Auckland always have taken a keen interest in the annual regatta, which in spite of the growth of many yacht clubs, still retains its supremacy as the leading aquatic event of the year.

The arrangements made by the committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. W. P. Endean, this year are very complete. The first-class yacht race will start at 10 a.m., and be followed by other classes throughout the day at 15 minute intervals up till 4 p.m. The schooner Ronaki will act as flagship, whence all events will start and finish.' A ferry service will leave at 1.30 p.m. to follow the principal races during the afternoon.

The entries in all sailing events are very _good, only the motor boat races showing a falling off, but these are made up by the interest shown in the outboard races, 23 of these little speedsters taking part in three races.

The entries, starting times and handicaps are as follow:-^-
