WHANGAREI'S DEVELOPMENT.
TOWN PLANNING PROPOSALS. SITE OF CIVIC CENTRE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. An interesting forecast of the development of the town of Whangarei was contained in a report submitted to the Whangarei Borough Council by a special committee constituted to consider town planning, in accordance with the Act.
The committee recommended that a surveyor be asked to prepare a plan for a proposed civic centre in an area adjoining Walton Street, between Cameron Street and Rose Street, that he investigate the possibility and cost of obtaining land in the area for the pur pose, and that he make a suggestion for a site for municipal buildings.
The committee also recommended that the Parks Committee be requested to investigate the suitability of Harrison's property, between Bank and Rathbone Streets, for the purpose of a public park, that the proposals for the planning of the borough be approved and that the preparation of a civic plan embodying such proposals be proceeded with.
It is proposed that the borough en gineer and the engineer to the Whangarei County Council be requested to in, vestigate the feasibility of laying out a stock route behind the Western hills.
The adoption of the committee's report was moved by the Mayor, but Councillor Pickmere moved that it be deferred for six months, with the exception of the recommendation concerning a possible stock route, to enable members pf the council to look into 1 the matter thoroughly. This course was approved.
