NEW ZEALAND'S BRIDGES.
MANY OUT OF DATE
There are 4385 substantial bridges in the New Zealand highway system. This total includes only structures over 25ft, and if small bridges and culverts are included the figure would be astound-
ing. The majority of the bridges in the Dominion are wooden structures, many of them being rather old for their work. Bridges built twenty years ago are being called on to carry traffic which could not be foreseen, and the wearing effect of fast and heavy traffic presents a maintenance problem which is not generally appreciated. The Main Highways Board has always urged local bodies to give close supervision to bridge work, and routine inspection is considered essential. In its bulletin on highway maintenance, the Highways Board urges responsible authorities to keep the junction of bridges in good order to prevent shock to both vehicles and decking.
