WELLINGTON, Monday.
One woman was killed and three others were injured, two of them seriously, when a motor bus containing 12 passengers suddenly left the Hutt Road and crashed into a telegraph pole with terrific force a few hundred yards on the northern 6ide of the Kaiwarra railway; bridge shortly before noon to-day. So violent was the impact that the noise could be heard a quarter of a mile awav. The passengers, all of whom were women, were flung out on the footpath amid a shower of broken g!ass and pieces of splintered wood. ' Mrs. Annie Eleanor Watson, widow,, aged 51, of 39, Grove Road, Kelburn, wa» killed.
Mrs. Frazer, of Ngaio, received severe head injuries.
Miss Gertie Bradley, of Khandallah* received severe injuries to the head and body.
Mrs. Grace Clothier, of Ngaio, had a wrist broken, but after being attended to at the Wellington Hospital she was allowed to proceed to her home.
Mrs. Watson, who was sitting on the first seat near the door, received terrible injuries. She was removed as soon as possible from the wreckage and placed on the roadway in an unconscious condition, awaiting conveyance to the hospital. Dr. Donald, of Petone, who waa on the scene a few minutes after the accident, did everything possible for her. She was dispatched in the ambulance to. the hospital with all haste, but died a few minutes after admission. She was the widow of the late Captain D. J. Watt son.
The bus, which is owned by "the Bell Bus Company, and was driven by John O'Gallaghan, shot across the bitumen road and travelled 108 feet out of its proper course before it struck the telegraph post. The superstructure was torn completely off, and for many yards. the road was covered with wreckage* seats and fittings being twisted into ani unrecognisable mass.
The telegraph pole was snapped off about five feet from the top
