SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
Miss Bowes held a very smart bridge party on Saturday evening at "Glenalvon." Wistaria and red roses were the floral decorations. The hostess wore a French gown of black chiffon with lace overdress.
An open afternoon was ' held yesterday in the lounge of the Lyceum. Club, by the bridge circle. The room was tastefully decorated with polished brass bowls of antirrhinum, in shades of terra cotta and winter sweet peas in deep red tones. There was • a good gathering of members, thirteen tables being arranged for the pleasure of the guests. ..
The October meeting of the Greenhithe Women's Institute was held last Thursday, when the afternoon's programme took the form of a competition of original essays on "How I Should Like to Spend a Week's Holiday." Many excellent contributions were read. On the previous evening Dr. J. R. Closs gave a lecture in the local hall, his subject being, "The Mind of the Growing Child." He dealt ably with his subject, and at the close answered many questions from inquirers in the audience. The lecture was given under the auspices of the Women's Institute.
