WHANGAREI A. AND P.
ASSOCIATION.
REFUND OF RATES SOUGHT.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHANGAREI, Monday. The Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society recently discovered that, under the Valuation of Lands Act, 1922, properties owned or occupied by an incorporated society are entitled to special consideration from the Valuation Department. As the outcome of correspondence the Valuer General reduced the unimproved value of the society's Walton Street property from £1675 to £840, and that of the Powhiri Avenue property from £180 to £90, a remission of 50 per cent.
Since 1923 the society has been paying rates on the higher basis to the Borough Council, and to-night Messrs. H. fr. Crawford and D. J. rinlayson asked that the amounts over-paid be refunded. In reply to Mr. Jack, Mr. Crawford said that the Powhiri Avenue section had originally been used for storing fixtures and other property, but 6ince the winter show building had been erected its use for that purpose had become unnecessary. An attempt had been made to dispose oi this section. The Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brake, moved that the question be referred to the finance committee. An important point had been raised by Mr. Jack as to whether more land was being held than was necessary under the Act and that required investigation. Mr. Jack, in seconding the motion, said the fact that the privileged position accorded the society under the Act had not been taken advantage of by th-j society was that body's fault. The motion was adopted."
