UNION OF THREE.

AMALGAMATION SUGGESTED. EDEN, ALBERT AND ROSKHX. NEW CITY POSSIBLE. In parts of suburban Auckland the spirit of amalgamation is very much in the air at the moment, and prospective mergers are the topic of the day. A petition was presented at a meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening requesting that a poll should be taken on the question of amalgamating with the city of Auckland; in the Mount Albert district a merger with the #ity is being seriously discussed by one sectipn of the residents, while a third suggestion is that a portion of the Mount Roskill area, adjacent to the boundary of Mount.Eden borough, on the south side, should be linked up with Mount Eden. The most interesting proposal mooted is that an effort should be made to amalgamate the Mount Albert, Mount Eden and Mount Roskill areas, and those who are tentatively discussing the matter are hopeful of fruition of a scheme which certainly has great potentialities. When information was sought on the subject to-day it was stated that the triumvirate* suggestion was as yet but "in the air," but it was pointed out that it would be possible if the residents majority of the three districts were agreeable,- to form a very strong local body union, as the combined population of the three districts is 40,953, according to the last census, and the combined capital value is £9,550,138. The point was likewise emphasised that the three united districts would hav.e sufficient population to seek the status of a city, seeing that with a population of 26,130, has that designation.

Should the proposal be carried into effect—it is but a possibility at the moment—a suitable name for the new suburban city would cause food for both thought and reflection. A coined name from syllables in the words "Eden, Albert and Roskill". presents some difficulties, but a Maori place name, or a suitable European word, might easily solve any problem of nomenclature.
