PAPAKURA FIRE BRIGADE.
A meeting of the Papakura Volunteer Fire Brigade Management Committee was held on Monday. A letter was received from the P. and T. Department advising that for the purpose of fire alarm the Department was prepared to allow the installation of a single wire system at the rate of £4 10/ per mile per annum. The installation of the terminal apparatus would not be undertaken by the Department. It was agreed to hold the matter In abeyance for the meantime. Considerable discussion arose over the matter of the destruction of Mr. M. J. Dobbings' house by tire, all being in agreement that the pressure of water was in no way responsible for the failure to extinguish the fire more quickly. • Mr. J. E. Woodhouse was emphatic that the pressure was such that the two men handling the lead of hose found difficulty in managing it. Doubt was expressed as to whether the brigade had been as expeditious as it might have been in coupling up with the water supply, though it was admitted that the nearest available fire plug was 850 feet distant. The captain promised to investigate the matter further.
