TEACHERS TURK LANDLORDS. board raises objection. School teachers' houses are not popular *»'it.^* ac^ers . Mr. A. Burns, chairman °[ Auckland Education Board, said at this morning's meeting that there were something like 200 unoccupied tcacnera' residences in the Dominion. The position in the Auckland district nad reached a stage where something Must be done. He thought that in future the board should not permit «ny teacher to let the school residence. Incre was no doubt many married !? ac^®* 8 with families would be glad of the house at schools where possibly a nigher grade single man was successful ana did not desire to live in the house. Mr, J. C. Boddje considered the board should refuse to allow teachers to let the residences. If the board refused permission the pnactice would be stopped automatically. The chairman explained that the board bad been in the habit of granting permission, and it had become rather a matter of course. He pointed out that in many cases wQiere houses were empty they got out of repair, and it cost the board much money to put them in order. Mr. T. U. Wells suggested that the board should givo teachers twelve months' notice olf its intention to prohibit the letting of teachers' residences. The chairman: My idea is that the prohibition should apply only to future appointments. The board resolved: "In future advertisements inviting applications for vacancies a clause will be inserted notifying that the snccessful applicant will not be allowed to let the teachers' yesidence."
