McNaugbton and Roberts (8), had an exciting experience on Monday evening, when sinking a. winseon a claim near the old Bonlder, mine, be-, tween Waihl and Waitawheta. Daring the day water commenced to.come in; and after fltfng >* shot later Jn the evening at the bottom of the winze, which is 50ft deep, gae was suddenly met with. ' ! One of the party* Mr. E. Roberts, when attempting to descend the winse shortly after Masting* wae overcome S' f»mes, bnt luckily his mates wars le to haul him to tlra surface-in'time to. save his life, and be soon recovered. Another member of the party, later ,attempted to get below, bnt he too-was driven back by the gas. Subsequently < •a test was mads by lowering a lighted candle, which, after a little flickering, waa extinguished. The occurrence waa repotted to' the < mining inepector by the party,: whoad- i vised the suspension of operations unti; i the danger waa removed.
