VICTORIA SUFFERS. Youth Drowned While Rounding Up Horses. HEAVY LOSSES IN STOCK. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. In some places the floods, caused by the recent heavy rains in different parts of the State, are receding, but in others there are fears of serious damage.

Many reports have been received of narrow escapes from death. At Heyfield, a youth was drowned while rounding up some horses.

Serious losses are expected amolg stock and sheep, which only recently were rescued from drought-stricken country. At Yallourn the old State coal mine was flooded and operations have ceased.

The Yarra, Latrobe and MacAllister rivers are rising rapidly. At Traralgon the country is covered to a depth of four fdet.

The Latrobe River, which is normally a chain wide, is now three miles across.

All residents have removed to high ground, 1 but the losses to stock are heavy and are increasing.

Many bridges have been washed away and in the timber country tram lines were destroyed.

The season continues very backward, the persistent cold weather retarding growth. Recent frosts - and heavy falls of snow along the Murray Valley have done' immense damage in the wine growing' and fruit areas, both in New South Wales and Victoria, including large Mocks of soldier settlements.

The first estimate was that 60 to 00 per cent of the vine crops had been destroyed, but a later estimate by the Irrigation,, Commission holds out th 6 hope tut a lot of vines and tree fruits at first, thought to have been destroyed ran be revived by extra irrigations, which it has been decided to give them.

At best, however, tne wine and dried fruit-output will be seriously affected.

Bad Weather Upsets Labour Day Celebrations. SYDNEY DELUGED, SYDNEY, October 3. Bad' weather is being experienced in various parts of Australia. In Sydney to-day jrain spoiled the Eight Hours Day holiday celebrations. There was a heavy thunderstorm accompanied by torrents of rain this morning and frequent showers fell until the afternoon.

The usual street procession, for which elaborate preparations hq.d been ' made in view of the State elections on Saturday, and the annual sports meeting had to be postponed. All other outdoor fixtures and excursions, excepting the races at Randwick, were also abandoned. Further copious falls of rain are reported from toe country.

HOUSES WRECKED.

LONELY ISLANDS DEVASTATED

TOKYO, October 3.

Cables from Bonin Islands (700 miles outh of Japan) report that a devastating storm broke over the islands and 100 houses were wrecked. The sugar crops were badly damaged but the casualties were few.

LIVES LOST AT HOME.

STORM SWEEPS ENGLAND. LONDON, October 3. Fierce gales and rainstorms are sweeping England. A number of lives have been lost and extensive damage is reported.—i (Sydney "Sun.")
