TRAIN CONTROL.
NEW SYSTEM INAUGURATED. PREVENTION OF DELAYS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A start has been made to instal the new train control system in the district offices of the Railway Department in MoOThouse Avenue. When this system is in operation one man will be able to control every train in the Canterbury district. All the stations in the district will be connected by telephone with the train control officer, who will have in front of him a diagram of all the lines. As each train passes a station it will be reported to this officer, who will then be able to see if it is running late or if it will be able to stop at certain stations to pick up goods. By this system delays to other trains, through a train running late, will be obviated, as the train running officer can see in an instant if it is necessary to alter the passing places. The system will take away from individual stationmasters the responsibility of running trains, and will centralise it in Christchurch.
It is anticipated that it will be necessary for a staff of train running officers to be on duty for the whole 24 hours of the day.
