TOFUA RETURNED. On arrival at Auckland from Western Pacific Islands this morning the Union Co.'s steamer Tofua underwent medical inspection in the streaii. before berthing at rbe Queen's wharf. The steamer left Auckland on September lu, and reached Sova on •September 15. Fine weather was experienced round the Islands, and the usual picnic at the Swallow Caves was held during the ship's stay at Vavau. On her return trip, the Toiua left Suva on Xhurs•day night, and experienced fair weather, with intermittent rain squalls." The Tofua is to sail again for Fiji, Tonga and Samoa at 11 a.m on Saturday. BRITAIN'S MOTOR FLEET. Among the voluminous statistics published with the new volume of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, there is disclosed the fact that the number and tonnage of the motor ships under British registry is greater than that of any other country in the world. It is quite true that they form a small percent- i age of the total tonnage of the country, but with 201 motor ships of 1,167,301 tons, the British motor fleet is easily ahead of that of Norway, the next competitor, which possesses 197 motor ships, of 580,551 tons. Italy comes next with 64 motor ships of 363,522 tons, while the United States has 182 motor-driven sea-going vessels of 318,506 tons.

Good time was made by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor ship Port Gisborne, which arrived at Wellington on her maiden voyage from London on Saturday evening, the vessel's average speed being 14.tk> knots.
