SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
One hundred and fifty guests responded to an invitation of Mrs. Pat Hally, to meet at her residence "Manahau," Parnell, last Thursday evening, to assist in forwarding the interests of the forthcoming "Colleen Bawn Fair." Music games and competitions were indulged in and. after a dainty supper had been done justice to, the distribution of trophies took place. The principal prize, a crystal wireless set, was won by Mrs. P. Barry, who received the congratulations of her many Auckland friends. As a result of a very happy evening's entertainment, the funds of the fair will be substantially augmented.
The fifth annual dance recital placed before a Taumarunui audience in the Theatre Royal on Friday nigh.t by Miss K. Somerville and her pupils attracted a large attendance. A host of 'juveniles took part and their items were interspersed by attractive numbers artistically carried out by adults. A Court minuet was staged, those taking part being Mrs. H. L. King and Mr. T. Hall, Mrs. K. Phillips and Mr. W. Fanthorpe, Mr. and Mrs. L. Oldham and the Rev. and Mrs. T. P. Weatherhog. This was daintily executed and was followed by a "modern" minuet, the dancers being Mis? K. Somerville and Mr. Oates, Miss Hughes and Mr. H. Johnston, Miss Kenderdine and Mr. C. Eady, Miss M. O'Brien and Mr. J. Gairdner.
Last evening the Musical Circle of the Lyceum Club, under the convencrship of Miss E. Kent, lield a very enjoyable musical open evening. It took the form of a French programme, the subject of French music and French musicians being delightfully introduced in a short paper by Mrs. Robertson. This was followed by a very fine musical programme given by the Moore Trio party, consisting of Mrs. Cyril Towsey and the Misses Berta Oarr and Ina Thompson, as vocalists, and Mrs. Robertson, Miss Amy Thompson and Miss Maida Hooker as pianists. At the close of the evening Miss Alice Law brought before the notice of the members t'he concert which js being arranged by all the musical societies of the city to assist Mrs. Emily Sutherland, who has done to much for public affairs and music generally in the past in Auckland. Miss Law asked all present to support this concert in. every way possible.
