AUCKLAND LEADS.

IN QUOTA OF UNEMPLOYED.

Interesting figures dealing with unemployment in the four centres of the Dominion are supplied in the recent issue of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce journel. A comparative statement relating to returns for the month of August for the last three years indicates that unemployment is distributed roughly in proportion to population. On this basis Auckland leads by a wide margin and has over 400 more unemployed than the next largest city, Wellington. The individual figures are:

Mention is made of the fact the 2317 unemployed in August are classified as follows:—Unskilled 1340, building 188,' engineering 139, transport 173, farming and gardening 136, hotel and domestic 82, clerks 47, salesmen 37, and others 177. Especially marked Was the increase of unemployed over previous years in the sawmilling and building trades, and to a lesser, extent farming, gardening and miscellaneous trades.

The Citizens' Fund. At noon to-day a sum of £2000 was well in sight in the citizens' fund, where the total showed at £1957. The "Star" subscription has gone over the £700 mark, and with other lists the unemployment fund stands at over £3000. The following are the latest contributions to the citizens' fund:—
