A BARGAIN.
A correspondent informed the Sydney Morning Herald" that three horses were sold for ninepence, and that others regarded as worthless were destroyed. It seems pitiful that the horse has outlived its usefulness in the country, where years ago a good hack or roadster was a very valuable animal. Many stories have beerf written round cheap bargains, particularly those that found a market in the pound yards—places where strays had a limited accommodation, and were lucky to find a new owner and better conditions. Here is an instance. Years ago, in a Kiverina town, a man, well known among stock, was attracted to a sale at the pound, yard. There was not a very big gathering, and just half a dozen horses inside the rails. The man referred to had some veterinary knowledge and plenty.of experience, and he picked out a red chestnut hide that just covered' tbV frame without being torn. He gave. 10/ for,the outcast, and when him down the main street he was chaffed tremendously, particularly by one man, who .said "Heljo. ——, where did you get the bones T* The man with the chestpnfc 4t= aIL in good. part; and after' a few days he turned out the horse. Now the men who chaffed the owner Regarding the came along one day, and said: "You've got°a;good one there,—■— -." "Not bad," was the reply. '"What do you want for him I", "Oh! I'll take, £40." Then, stfter a short , conversation arid overhaul,- the awner agreed to.take v £2o. With cash'in.hand, he said to the 'purchaser a' bargain, but that's , the 'bon.ee'.you h\ughed,atl" »., « ~ " f , ;
