AMATEUR CYCLING.

COMMENTS ON RIDERS.

MORE GOOD JUNIORS OUT.

MEN FOR THE FIFTY MILE RACE.

(By 'SPROCKET.") COMING EVENTS. September 10— Fifty Miles N>w Zealand Championship. Junior and Open Ctcl* Handicaps at Auckland Park. September 17—Fifty MUes Auckland Provincial Championship. Junior Cycle Handicaps at Alexandra Park.

The usual junior race on the Manakau Cycle Club's afternoon's programme was extended to eleven miles last Saturday. the result being that only nine riders competed. Keen racing, however, was witnessed, and, K. Foubister excepted, all finished in remarkably fresh condition. The rider mentioned, through a mishap to his machine, was unable to complete the distance, but effecting repairs, raced in the senior time trial. °

The time trial is always an interesting race, and Saturday's event was no exception. After deducting handicap allowances it was found that all riders finished within a few minutes of the winner. It is interesting to note the very slight differences between the actual riding times of the various competitors. After the two fastest time riders, there are only seconds right to the bottom of the list. Remarkable handicapping is shown by the fact that J. H. Wade and C. G. Galbraith covered the twenty-two miles in precisely the same time, and, having one minute start each, dead-heated in both the time trial and sealed handicap. Actual performances and places are as follow: — Actual Finishing Rider. H.icp. rldin*time. place. n>. s. h. m. s.

The remaining nine starters either failed to complete the course or were so hopelessly late as not to be timed.

The winner of the sealed handicap, R. Capp, is a junior rider who arrived too late to compete' in the under Iβ race. He was expected to show up well, but his riding was far better than anybody anticipated. Capp won the Mount Albert Secondary School cycle championship, and has been improving ever since. : Keith Roue was again well up to the I front, and rode well to get third fastest time. His lap times were*almost exactly the same, the hist only being nine second's faster than the previous laps. His handicap should not suffer on this account, however, as this is his first prise this season.

Any person having doubts as to H. Dwight's ability of riding in unpaced races should have lost them after the fourth Up race last Saturday. Dwight rode a cool and heady race, and after the second hip never looked like being defeated. The previous best time for this race was 1 hour 6 seconds, established by M. P. Byrnes earlier in the season, and Dwight'a time waa only nine seconds slower. These two brilliant cyclists should uphold, or rather establish, a reputation for Auckland in the New Zealand fifty next Saturday.

Wilson hae been regaining his excellent form of two or three years ago. Hβ waa for a long time in a very stale condition, but it will not be long before he will ride again off the scratch mark. Lichfield and D. Hope were determined to collect the fastest time honours in the eleven miles event, and from the outset did not relax until the line was crossed. Forming a perfect combination, in the first lap they had gained about fifteen seconds on the scratch pair, and increased this considerably in the remaining 5} miles. Lichfield was a little too good for his co-marker, and came away to beat Aldred and Keene for third place and fastest time. The time, 30m 31s, is remarkably good for junior riders. A. Rose rode the best race of his career, and won by three lengths from Keane. This lad has not missed a race this year, and well deserves his victory. - Keane is a new junior, and has ridden With average success in every race. In recent years cycling has made rapid progress throughout the Dominion, and it is high time an amateur controlling body was organised for cycling only. A smoke social will be held in the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday to accord a hearty welcome to visiting competitors for the New Zealand fifty miles amateur road championship. Auckland provincial amateur medals will be presented.
