PASSENGER LOST.
ON VOYAGE TO PAEROA.
LETTER LEFT TOR CAPTAIN
MAX EMPLOYED AT WAIHI
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
PAEROA, tins day,
On the arrival of the steamer Taniwha from Auckland this morning, Captain Freeman reported that a passenger, F. W. Butler, had disappeared overboard during the trip. Butler had been talking with other passengers and appeared to be restless, but otherwise he appeared normal. About 10.30, with the other passengers, he retired to his bunk. When the ship arrived at Turua a letter addressed to the "skipper" of the ship was found m the smokeroom by the mate. The letter intimated that Butler intended going overboard, and requested tho captain to forward his bag and coat to Mrs. Butler at Waihi. The ship was searched, but no sign of the man could be found. It is thought that Butler went overboard before the steamer entered the river.
The missing man had recently been employed by the Waihi Borough Council aa acting-engineer. He was about ">3 years of age, and leaves a widow and three young children.
