OBITUARY.
MAJOR-GENERAL L. WOOD. (RecelTed 10 a.m.) BOSTON, August 7. Major-General Leonard Wood, Gover-nor-General of the Philippines, died on Sunday following an operation.—(A, and N.Z. and Sydney "Sun.")
The late Major-General Leonard Wood was bom at Winchester, New Hampshire, on October 9, 1860. He had a successful career in the army, and in May, 1898, was appointed Colonel in charge of the Ist U.S. Cavalry (Rough Riders), and Brigadier-General in July of the same year for his services at Las Guasimas and San Juan Hill. He wae again promoted to MajorGeneral in 1899, and on Juoe 30, 1901, \va.s honourably discharged from voluntary service. He vae appointed Military Governor of; Cuba in 1899. until! the transfer of thej Government of j Cuba to the Cuban j Republic, on May! 20. 1902. In 1918-19 he organised and I trained the 89lh X.A. Division, and 10th j (Regular Army), and various special retriments and battalions. Ho was a candidate! for the Republican nomination for Presi-I dent in 1920, and the following year he j was appointed Governor-General ot the Philippine Islands. ;
