HANDY WINS STEEPLECHASE. CHIEF FLAT EVENT TO PITA. (Ily Tflegrnph.—Special to "Star.") fiISBORNE, Saturday. The* annual meeting of the Poverty Buy Hunt Club wa3 held in fine weather, and before a larg« attendance. The rourao was in good condition. The totalizator handled £9099, compared with £9173 last year, a decrease of £70.

The Chasers.

Tho big event, the Hunt Club Steeple chane provided an easy victory for the Hawkc's Bay owned gelding, Hand}', who headed the field over the whole course and won easily, Birka being his hardest opponent, but the weight stopped her. Handy went to the post carrying over a third of the investments, Birka being £80 less in demand, with Mahia three less supporters.

Paeeing the stand the last time Handy was leading Birka by four lengths, with Mahia five lengths back. There was no change in the order along the back to the half-mile, where Birka tried to reduco the leader's advantage, but Handy always had a bit in hand and won comfortably by four lengths, Mahia being three lengths away third. Pillar Box was a-quarter of a mile away fourth. Not content with one spill F. A. Dunn, rider of Momentous, remounted, and though he negotiated the first of the stand double safely. Momentous came over the second and Dunn broke hia collarbone.

Favourite Breaks Sequence. The first event of the day in which a favourite failed to win was the Swarthnioor Trial Hack Handicap, from which L'Autumn was withdrawn, leaving eight to go to the post. Abisogne was made a hot favourite, carrying a third of tn*e money on the machine. Singleton being about £300 less fancied, with Master Damon also well backed. Master Damon led out attended by Desert Coin, the leader-having a four-lengthe advantage. Half way round Antonus moved up from tho bunch. Master Damon showed the way into the straight from Antonus, with Desert Coin,, Singleton and Abisogne next. Master Damon appeared to have the race well in hand, but at the distance Singleton came through and beat Master Damon by three-quarters of a length, with the fast finishing Abisogne half a length away third. Polydorus waa fourth.

Arataura Again. By winning the Awapuni Hurdles Handicap in easy fashion Arataura scored a double for the day. Only live horses paraded for the event, Barrier, Lombardo and Piripono being scratched. Arataura was a well backed favourite, Royal Heather being £60 les,a in demand. Lady Arch led out, negotiating the ttrst hurdle three lengths ahead of Royal Heather, who before long gave way to Aratarua. At the bend Lady Arch fell back last and Waioeka Jack and Mountain Top took second and third place. Arataura entered the straight three lengths in advance of Mountain Top, who put in a challenge, but Arataura responded, winning casing up by fivo lengths. Waioeka Jack was two and a half lengths back, third. The Concluding Event. The meeting concluded with the Rapanui Hack Flat, for which eleven horses went to the post. The public went solidly for the First Prince and Piripono bracket, entrusting them with a fourth of the investment!", Jen being next in demand. Evensong and Dutchie were first out, and at the end of a furlong Evensong took charge, leading Dutchie by a length, with Rapiata a similar distance l>eok, followed by Jen. Nearing the entrance- to the straigh.t the field bunched, and Evensong entered the home stretch a little ahead of Rapiata, Jen, Rakaroa, and Cherry Girl. The lastnamed put in a great run and won by' a length and a-half from Rakaroa, who beat Jen bv a neck.

The tot« investments for the day were £70 down compared with last year.
