Tomb For Lonely Grave Of Great Explorer. WHERE SHACELETON RESTS. LONDON. August ,">. The material for a tomb to lie erected on the grave of the late Sir Ernest Shackleton, the Antarctic explorer, left Barry Dock in eij;ht giant packing cases aboard the collier Harpon.
The late Sir Ernest Sliackleton, whosi name will always occupy a prominent placi in the history of p"Mar exploration, wai born in Ireland in 1874. On leaving colleg< he entered the merchant marine, and ir 1901-04 was with the late Captain Scot in the expedition to the Antarctic. Or January 1. 1908, he sailed from Lytteltor in command of an expedition which reached a point about 97 miles from tht Sonth Pole. Sliackleton and four others, made a great journey to the South, and had extraordinary hardships. But for th*> .fact that their food gave out, they would have reached the South Pole. Sir Ernest, was knighted for his work. In 1911 he set; out on another expedition in the Quest.: and on Januarv 5, 19C2. he died from thej after effects of an attack of influenza, andj waa buried on the lonely island of South; Georgia, which lies 800 miles east of the. Falkan Islands, in the South Atlantic | Ocean. The news of his death did not reach. i the outuide world until January 30. ;
