GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.

BOBBY JONES' WIN. WILD SCENES. RESCUED BY POLICE. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, July 16. There was the most "wonderful scene of enthusiasm ever witnessed on any golf course in the world when Bobby Jones holed the putt that made him British open champion, with a record score of 285. No amateur has ever before won the championship two years in succession, while it is 20 years since the feat was performed by James Braid, the famous professional. Moreover, .Tones beat the record for the championship '201, by six strokes. Places round the green were fought for by 12,000 spectators, and Jones had to force his way through. Directly he holed people swept in and obliterated the turf. .Tones looked in vain for an avenue of escape, but there was none. He was mounted shoulder-high and eventually had to be rescued by the police. The outstanding feature of his play was unquestionably the driving, which was stupendous. An average length of 275 yards was mainiained throughout the round, and the straightness of his drives was ideal.

Some shots were prodigious. One at the second hole, which measures 401 yards, being so long that it, only required a spade massie for an approach shot. Kirk wood might have beaten Boomer if he had not poked jerkily at four short putts.

Win by Record Score. The scores of the leading {'layers were:— Jones, 255: Boomer and Robson, 291; E. R. Whitcombe and Kir.kwood. 293; C. A. Whitcombe, 29(5; Havers and Hodson, 297; Cotton, 295; Herd, 300; Barnes, '>01; C'ompston, 303; Braid, Ray and Dr. Tweddell, each 30H; J. Tolley and R. Harris, 307; L. Nettlefold and Sevmour, 31S.

The winner's aggregate of 255 is 11 strokes less than the aggregate score in which Jock Hutchison won at St. Andrews in 1921. when he tied with R. H. Metherel in the four rounds.

Boomer, Robson ami Whitcombe did extremely well to keep so close to the peerless Jones. Their aggregates of 291, 291 and 293 respectively represent practically perfect golf. This fact serves only to accentuate the unique brilliancy of Bobbv Jones.

Two youthful professionals. Hodson and Cotton, emerged in this championship and kept close to the leader for at least two rounds.

Tn the qualifying rounds and in the first round of the championship proper, the British amateurs did extremely well, five of tho leading 15 players being amateurs.

Apart from the first round, Boomer and Robson were two strokes better than Jones, their aggregate for the last three rounds being 215, 215, 217 respectiveyl. The score of 08 by Bobby .Tones in his first round equals the extraordinary record for the course put up by George Duncan in 1022.
