AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. •JOVERXMEXT TAXATIOX VERY HIGH. Ihe annual meeting nf members of the Avondale Jockey Club was held at the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. Mr. D. MeLeod being in the chair. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the president apologised for the absence of Messrs. (I. Baildon and A. Hanna. who are at present indisposed. Ihe report wa- a very comprehensive one and gave a good idea of the doings of the club during the past twelve months. Members could re>t assured that the committee was fully alive to their responsibilities. The erection of hte new stands will mean an outlay of many thousand*, interest on which'will have to be provided for and the committee would have plenty to engage their attention in this, direction."' "It "ill l>e seen from the balance--heet thai internment and local taxation is very high and absorb a considerable amount of the club's revenue," s-aid the president, "and it may be interesting to point out that in the past three year- a sum of no less than t.32..')U8 had been paid under these headings, £21!)ti 17. 5 being to the local body."' As the club's grounds were always available, free of charge, for Rugby football, sports, picnics and. to the military authorities for camp-, etc.. and only umml for four day's racing in the year, they could safely be termed a park for the people uf Avondale and surrounding districts. The time had arrived, however, when the club, in fairness to ( themselves, would have to seriouslv cou- '' aider the passing of some of their heavy burden on to the bodies concerned. The Gaming Bill. ''The (iaming Bill now before the House, should be of great assistance to clubs, providing, as. it did, for the telegraphing ot money to the course, the publication of dividends, etc. If it should become law, it will undoubtedly greatly minimise some of the evils at present exiting in connection with racing. There is nothing of an outstanding nature to come before the forthcoming racing conference, the principal contention bving on the question of dates. Sfome of the alterations proposed, while assisting certain of the larger clubs.may have the opposite effect on the smaller clubs. The matter is one that will require the most careful consideration of the authorities appointed to deal with the question. "Regarding next season's stake money your committee hope to be able to avoid a reduction, and. if possible, give away the same amount as last year. However, it is a matter the committee can be relied upon to consider from everv point of view before any alteration is made. The Auckland Racing Club have again granted us the use of their course for September next, and the necessary authorities having been obtained, the club's spring meeting will be held at Eller-lie."' The report and balanee-?heet were adopted.
